How Do You Fix Damaged Ductwork?

A dirty male hand, holding a paintbrush, is spreading caulk over a house air duct joint with a paintbrush. The caulk has been applied from a tube with a caulk gun and the brush is evenly spreading it over the joint. Caulking residential ducts prevents air-conditioned or heated air from escaping the duct and prevents ambient air from entering the system. This is a new practice in homebuilding to increase energy efficiency, eventually it may be come standard or mandatory.And no, the answer is not, “with duct tape.”

“But wait,” you might ask, “why is it called duct tape then?!”

After all, you’ve probably heard the old adage, “all you need for home repairs is two things—if it doesn’t move and it’s supposed to, WD-40. If it moves and it’s not supposed to, duct tape!” And, we agree, duct tape is a great temporary solution to many home repair needs. But, not ductwork damage!

Can I Use Duct Tape to Fix My Ventilation System?

Yes, duct tape can resolve just about any fix-it situation … temporarily. That’s right, duct tape is not actually appropriate to use on ductwork breaches. Who would have thought?

One of the biggest “energy thieves” in the standard home, and cause for AC repair in Round Rock, is from leaks in the air ducts, which is not likely something you think about a whole lot. But proper duct sealing from HVAC experts can stop your AC system form losing as much as 30% of the air that moves throughout the duct system.

This is one component of your HVAC system that is easy to take for granted. Especially considering that most of the time, they are out of sight and therefore out of mind.

But air ducts that accumulate damage from corrosion and/or age, or ducts that received poor initial installation, can have a serious impact on the functionality and efficiency of your heating and cooling systems. It can lead to not only a decrease in comfort, but a rise in the contamination that enters your indoor air. If your air ducts have gaps, leaks, or any bad connections, then they must be dealt with by a professionally trained HVAC technician.
