Get Your Ducts Sealed This Winter

Winter is here, and if you aren’t using your heater on a daily basis, you probably will soon. You may have already had your heating system professionally checked and repaired, but those aren’t the only steps you need to take to be prepared for this winter. Let’s take a look at one of the lesser-known steps that can really improve your home heating system this winter: duct sealing.

What Is Duct Sealing?

Duct sealing is a method of closing leaks in the ductwork of your home, usually by painting mastic into the gaps. Mastic is a kind of epoxy that, when dry, is stiff enough to seal the leak but flexible enough to move with the duct without cracking. The mastic is also often taped over with regulation duct tape. Unlike the duct tape that you are probably familiar with, this kind of duct tape has a layer of aluminum in it that helps seal the duct.

Why Duct Sealing Is Important

There are a couple of things you need to understand about duct leaks. First, they are incredibly common. Ducts can develop leaks during installation, or simply during normal use. They are everywhere, and often one duct network will have multiple leaks in it. Second, they cause massive drops in heating and air conditioning efficiency. The U.S. Department of Energy has estimated that forced air systems lose about 30% of their total output to duct leaks. That’s nearly one-third of your total climate control output being lost, and which you are still paying for. If you want to increase heating efficiency and save money at the same time, get your ducts sealed this winter.
