Ductless Problems to Watch for This Winter

Ductless systems offer a lot of advantages, but they still experience problems just like any other heating system. If you’re using a ductless system to keep warm this winter, you should keep an eye out for a number of different problems that commonly crop up. These problems are progressive, which means they will worsen the longer that they are allowed to develop. So keep an eye out for these symptoms so that you can call for repairs as soon as possible.

Hissing Noises

Hissing noises coming from your ductless system likely indicate a leak in your refrigerant line. This is a huge issue, as refrigerant is one of the most important parts of your HVAC system. Without enough refrigerant in the system, the ductless unit won’t be able to properly siphon or transport thermal energy. Eventually, the refrigerant leak will completely rob the system of refrigerant and cause it to break down. You will need to have a professional examine your refrigerant line to find and repair the leak.

Cold Air

Ductless heating systems can also act as air conditioners, by reversing the flow of refrigerant. This is accomplished by using a part called the “reversing valve.” The valve has a slide inside it, which moves from one position to the other to change the direction that refrigerant flows through the system. Sometimes, the valve can become stuck in one position, preventing the ductless system from switching between modes. If your ductless system is stuck in air conditioning mode, it is very likely that your reversing valve needs to have repairs. That should enable your system to switch freely between modes again.
