Determining When to Replace Your Air Conditioner

when-to-replace-your-air-conditionerYour central cooling system, no matter how well you take care of it, will not last forever. At some time or another, it will need repairs, and eventually it will age to the point that repairs turn into a replacement. But how do you know when that time has come? There are a number of factors to take into consideration, and it’s usually a combination of them that will solidify your decision.

There are a number of factors to take into consideration, and it’s usually a combination of them that will solidify your decision.

How Old Is Your System?

Your cooling system’s lifespan is dependent on a number of factors. This includes how you use it, its manufacturer, how often it is maintained (we recommend once a year—twice a year for heat pumps) and what type of system it is. All that said, in general, if your air conditioner is over a decade old, it may certainly be time for an upgrade.

You Constantly Need Repairs

If your air conditioning system is not only aging but is also prone to operational problems, and repairing it has become a chore, then it could be time to give up on the repairs and schedule an upgrade. This is particularly true if your next repair calls for a major part replacement, such as the compressor.

You Want or Need Higher Efficiency

Do you want better performance from your air conditioner, for less money? Today’s cooling systems will, in most cases, operate much more effectively and efficiently than those manufactured even a decade ago.

While You’re At It, How Are Your Ducts?

Let’s say you’ve decided to bite the bullet and replace your central air conditioning system. That’s great! We’re happy to help you make an informed decision about which system is best for you, and ensure that it is properly sized and fitted for your specific needs and your living space. But what about your ducts?

What About My Ducts?

A high efficiency air conditioner isn’t worth much if your ductwork is in poor condition. Breached or damaged ductwork can cause conditioned air to leak into unoccupied spaces, such as your attic or crawlspace. This means that air is being wasted, and your cooling system has to work that much harder to do its job, therefore working inefficiently. A newer air conditioner will function better, yes, but you could actually be causing it to wear down faster by not caring for your ductwork properly.

Additionally, damaged ductwork can be impacting the quality of your indoor air. Duct breaches allow harmful contaminants into your ventilation system. In fact, according to the National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA), your ductwork serves as a collection point for a very high number of airborne contaminants that can affect those who suffer from allergies and asthma, plus even normally healthy individuals.

Fortunately, a thorough duct cleaning service can solve this latter problem. We typically recommend you have this done every 3–5 years. It’s a good rule of thumb to have it done when you upgrade your AC system, so everything can work together effectively and efficiently.
