3 Noises You Don’t Want to Hear Your AC System Making

3-noises-air-conditioner-dont-wantWhen you live someplace as consistently warm throughout the year like we do, it goes without saying that using your air conditioner on a daily basis is a necessity. Since we’re nearing the peak of the hottest time of the year now, however, it’s important that you keep a close eye out in case any problems develop. Problems with your cooling system are more likely to occur during this time of the year.

One of the most common signs that you are having issues with your AC that require air conditioning repair services in Georgetown, TX is that it’s making weird noises during operation. There are 3 sounds in particular that you never want to hear coming from the AC system. We’ve covered them below, and what they may mean.

1. Short-Cycling

This is one of the most obvious signs that something is wrong with your air conditioner. Short-cycling is indicated by the sound of your compressor turning on and off every couple of minutes. It’s problematic for a couple different reasons. To begin with, it cuts down significantly on your cooling system’s ability to circulate cool air.

Secondly, short-cycling ramps up the level of wear and tear that the system has to deal with overall. Prolonged short-cycling causes components of your air conditioner to wear down and fail faster than they otherwise would, and if the problem continues without being fixed, it can shorten the lifespan of the unit.

Short-cycling can be caused by poor installation—if the cooling system is too large for your home. The problem will be apparent right away if this is the case. Otherwise, you could be dealing with something as simple as a clogged air filter (these should be replaced every 1–3 months) to a malfunctioning component within the compressor.

2. Grinding

A grinding noise coming from your AC system most likely indicates an issue with the air handler, the part of your cooling system responsible for circulating air throughout your home. Moving that much air generates a great deal of friction, so the air handler motor contains lubricated bearings to help it run more smoothly.

These bearings wear down over time, causing the friction on the system to increase. If you detect a grinding noise coming from your AC system, contact our pros for repairs as soon as possible. The bearings in your air handler motor must be replaced before they fail completely and cause the motor to burn out.

3. Hissing

If you hear a hissing sound coming from your cooling unit, you probably have air bubbles in the refrigerant line. This means you have a leak, which is a much more serious issue than you may realize. Your AC system relies on a set amount (charge) of refrigerant to operate as it should.

A leak will deplete the system’s refrigerant supply, causing a significant decline in output. Eventually, the refrigerant level will drop to a point that your AC system will break down entirely. So, if you hear your AC unit making this noise, particularly if you also notice fluid leaking from the system, contact our pros immediately.
